Liuwa
11 day tour to Liuwa and Kafue National Parks
General Information:
Liuwa Plains National Park is in the extreme west of the country. In November, when thousands of gnu migrate from Angola,
this park turns into a 'little Serengeti'. The wide open spaces dotted with gnus, buffalo, zebra and other herbivores, is
an unforgettable sight. Big cats and the rare wild dog are present too.
The Kafue National Park is one of the largest in Africa. Game is plentiful and the landscape spectacular.
An adventurous tour to a unique destination.
Some highlights of the tour:
- Unique wildlife experiences in Kafue National Park - leopard sightings on the night drives are not uncommon.
- The fauna and flora of the remote Liuwa Plains Park

Day 3: Liuwa Plains National Park
Further on we cross the mighty Zambezi River by pontoon. Driving through traditional villages and across
the Zambezi floodplains, we drive towards the Liuwa Plains.
Camping in the wild, close to the Liuwa Plains
Day 4 and 5: Liuwa Plains National Park
There are few roads in Liuwa Plains National Park. That, however, is part of the park’s attraction: around 3660 km2
of untouched Africa. Most of this is a vast honey-coloured sea of grass, with just the occasional pan, island of raffia palms,
or small tree-belt interrupting the flatness. The environment is unlike any other park in Zambia, and the game is prolific.
Thousands of wildebeest, with zebra, tsessebe and buffalo, group together, joining the more static resident roan antelope, red
lechwe and reedbuck. The open plains are particularly good for oribi. With these come the predators: mainly lion, hyena and
wild dog, though the odd leopard also occurs here.
Camp in the wild
Day 6: Zambezi Floodplains - Kafue Park
Going back across the Zambezi River we head towards the Kafue National Park. We stock up in Mongu and drive east.
Camp in Mongu (or in the wild on the way to Kafue)
Day 7, 8 and 9: Kafue National Park (northern and central section)
Like many other Parks in Zambia, this is also a Park in a remote area, beautiful landscape and many animals to be seen. Hippo,
crocodile, lechwe, crowned crane, wattled crane, lions, puku, oribi (antelope species that occurs here) and zebra are but a few
examples of the animals to be seen here.
The northern area has become renowned for its night drives with the game scouts to see leopard, white-tailed mongoose, bushbabys
and other nocturnal animals. Leopard sightings are common, and it is sometimes possible to watch them hunting! An unforgettable
experience!
